Take a look at the social media profiles of iPhone repair shops across the country and you’ll see how popular color customization really is. Pictures of blinged-out iPhones and brightly colored iPads seem to be everywhere you look! According to the Instagram #iphonerepair community (which we highly suggest checking out if you haven’t already) color customizations are a great way to add a little extra revenue to your business without making a huge initial investment. Color customization presents you with a great opportunity to upsell each and every iPhone repair you perform – simply by giving your customers options.

Jess from FavGeek in Decatur, AL knows color conversions can be an easy upsell. “Every time a customer comes in with a broken iPod Touch 4th gen, we give them two options: to repair the device to its original color for $88, or for $5 more we can use a colored screen – and 9 out of 10 times they choose to change the color. Customizations are popular because people like owning a device that’s unique to them.”

It goes something like this: “I can repair your iPhone back to its original state for $__, OR I can customize your iPhone using your favorite color glass screen and/or back cover for only $__ more!” As you might know Western civilization is largely an individualistic culture — which means most people will take any opportunity they have to showcase their individuality to the world. What does this mean for the repair shop owner? The odds are in your favor that a customer will choose to pay more for a customized repair as opposed to blending in with a sea of black and white iPhones. Color customization is a popular repair option; if you don’t currently offer it maybe now’s the time to reconsider.

Differences Between iPhone 5/5s/5c Screen Assemblies

When the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were released this past September, as usual eTech Parts got tons of questions about the compatibility between replacement screens for the iPhone 5/5s/5c. This is a question we get every time a new device is released, as people look for more economical ways to replace the front glass of the newest devices.

After careful research and comparisons between the three front LCD assemblies, we can say without a doubt each of these screens will not work with any device other than the one it was made for.

Each LCD connector is different across the board, while the digitizer cable for the iPhone 5s/5c is the same.

The hole for the home button is the same size across the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

As seen on iFixit’s teardown, the iPhone 5s screen has a slightly lower weight of 42g while the iPhone 5c screen weighs in at 42.7g.

Though there aren’t too many differences between the LCD assemblies for the iPhone 5/5s/5c, there are enough differences to make each screen incompatible for use with any other device. The jury’s still out on whether iPhone 5/5c glass-only repairs can be performed using only the front glass piece, but until we get our hands on the front glass for the iPhone 5c it remains to be seen. We also have parts for iPhone 5s and parts for iPhone 5c available for purchase.

Has anyone had any luck using iPhone 5 glass on an iPhone 5c repair? Or vice versa? As always we love hearing feedback from members of our Repair Community, so keep it coming! LIKE us on Facebook and be sure to follow us on Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr!

Update: Dave Takushi has verified for us that the glass on the iPhone 5 is the same as the glass on the iPhone 5c. They have performed glass-only repairs on the iPhone 5c using glass only parts for the iPhone 5. Glass-only repairs are tricky and require the proper tools and training to complete, read more here.

CAUTION: iPhone 5s Touch ID Sensor Cable

If you or someone you know is attempting an iPhone 5s repair, READ BELOW and please proceed with caution!

Like anyone we hate hearing bad news, but when it has to do with the reparability of a device – or lack thereof – we hate it even more. When a device is designed in a way that makes it extremely difficult to repair, it directly affects the jobs of repair technicians; which brings us to the topic of iPhone 5s Touch ID replacement.

When we heard about issues replacing the iPhone 5s Touch ID sensor, we were nervous and a little bit skeptical. Mendmyi, in collaboration with Ally Kazmucha of iMore, released a report on the subject after they had an issue replacing a customer’s iPhone 5s Touch ID sensor cable. After hours of “DFU restores, and multiple perfectly functioning Touch ID sensors tried,” the Touch ID was still failing to respond. Once the original Touch ID sensor was replaced it worked perfectly.

The conclusion? Each Touch ID sensor cable in an iPhone 5s is tied to the unique logic board inside the phone. No resets, software updates or jailbreaks are going to crack this one. According to Mendmyi’s blog, “Apple has already stated that scanned fingerprint data is stored on the A7 chip in a Secure Enclave that is only accessible to the sensor itself.” So unless you can physically alter the A7 processing chip, which we DO NOT under any circumstance suggest attempting, if the Touch ID sensor cable gets damaged there is no way to replace it.

So what does this mean for repair technicians?

When repairing the iPhone 5s, proceed with caution. The extremely fragile Touch ID sensor cable is attached to the screen assembly and is very easy to rip during disassembly. If you rip this cable, Touch ID function will not work.

Keep in mind this is just a word of caution; we’re not saying there won’t be a solution in the future, just that there’s not one yet. Don’t let this keep you from offering the iPhone 5s repair to your customers if you feel comfortable enough to proceed – after all, we do have the parts for iPhone 5s available now! Follow careful instructions, such as those found at iFixit, and work slowly.

As always eTech Parts is on the case to find a solution to the Touch ID issue, and hopefully we have some better news in the near future.
