Take a look at the social media profiles of iPhone repair shops across the country and you’ll see how popular color customization really is. Pictures of blinged-out iPhones and brightly colored iPads seem to be everywhere you look! According to the Instagram #iphonerepair community (which we highly suggest checking out if you haven’t already) color customizations are a great way to add a little extra revenue to your business without making a huge initial investment. Color customization presents you with a great opportunity to upsell each and every iPhone repair you perform – simply by giving your customers options.

 

Jess from FavGeek in Decatur, AL knows color conversions can be an easy upsell. “Every time a customer comes in with a broken iPod Touch 4th gen, we give them two options: to repair the device to its original color for $88, or for $5 more we can use a colored screen – and 9 out of 10 times they choose to change the color. Customizations are popular because people like owning a device that’s unique to them.”

 

 

It goes something like this: “I can repair your iPhone back to its original state for $__, OR I can customize your iPhone using your favorite color glass screen and/or back cover for only $__ more!” As you might know Western civilization is largely an individualistic culture — which means most people will take any opportunity they have to showcase their individuality to the world. What does this mean for the repair shop owner? The odds are in your favor that a customer will choose to pay more for a customized repair as opposed to blending in with a sea of black and white iPhones. Color customization is a popular repair option; if you don’t currently offer it maybe now’s the time to reconsider.

Differences Between iPhone 5/5s/5c Screen Assemblies

When the new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were released this past September, as usual eTech Parts got tons of questions about the compatibility between replacement screens for the iPhone 5/5s/5c. This is a question we get every time a new device is released, as people look for more economical ways to replace the front glass of the newest devices.

 

 

After careful research and comparisons between the three front LCD assemblies, we can say without a doubt each of these screens will not work with any device other than the one it was made for.

 

 

Each LCD connector is different across the board, while the digitizer cable for the iPhone 5s/5c is the same.

 

 

The hole for the home button is the same size across the iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

 

 

As seen on iFixit’s teardown, the iPhone 5s screen has a slightly lower weight of 42g while the iPhone 5c screen weighs in at 42.7g.

 

Though there aren’t too many differences between the LCD assemblies for the iPhone 5/5s/5c, there are enough differences to make each screen incompatible for use with any other device. The jury’s still out on whether iPhone 5/5c glass-only repairs can be performed using only the front glass piece, but until we get our hands on the front glass for the iPhone 5c it remains to be seen. Update: Dave Takushi has verified for us that the glass on the iPhone 5 is the same as the glass on the iPhone 5c. They have performed glass-only repairs on the iPhone 5c using glass only parts for the iPhone 5. Glass-only repairs are tricky and require the proper tools and training to complete, read more here.
