Troubleshooting Unresponsive iPod Touch 4 Screens

In July we reported on issues our customers were having with unresponsive iPhone 4S screens, where upon installation the LCD screen wouldn’t light up at all. The issue seemed to become less prevalent as time passed, and we stopped getting calls and questions about the issue. Unfortunately as more and more calls come in regarding a similar issue with screens for the iPod Touch 4, we think it’s likely there’s a similar reoccurring issue.

From our previous article discussing unresponsive iPhone 4S Screens:

“The new IC chips in the iPhone 4S LCD cables are only compatible when used with iOS 6.0 and above. If a screen with this new IC chip is installed on a device that hasn’t been updated to 6.0 or above, the LCD will not light up and the screen will not work. If installed on a device with iOS 6.0 and above, there are no issues and the screen should work perfectly.”

We’ve heard customers are having similar issues while installing new screens for the iPod Touch 4th generation. Sometimes the LCD screen won’t light up at all. Other times the screen will work fine at first, but as soon as the iPod runs out of battery or shuts off manually, the LCD screen won’t light back up. Our repair tech customers are getting iPods back that worked perfectly when they left the repair shop, but stop working after the customer turns off the iPod.

After going through several troubleshoots and resets, we’ve come to the conclusion that the issue stems from IC chip/software incompatibility. After we upgraded the software on our tester iPods, the previously “defective” LCD screen assemblies worked just fine.

If you have encountered multiple “defective” iPod Touch 4 screens in a row, in which the LCD doesn’t light up, or works intermittently, we highly recommend checking the operating system on the iPod to make sure it’s an update above 6.0.1 and compatible with the IC chip in the LCD cable.

How to download iOS update on iPod Touch 4

  1. Connect the device to a power source and Wi-Fi. You will need a Wi-Fi connection to download the updated software onto the device.
  2. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. The device will automatically check for an available update.
  3. If an update is available, choose Download. This will download the update onto your device.
  4. Once the download has completed, choose Install. This will update the device’s iOS.

You can also update a device’s operating system by syncing and installing through iTunes.

Hopefully this issue hasn’t happened to you personally, but if it has let us know how you dealt with it! We’re always looking to discuss issues and ideas on our Repair Community, so head over and join in the conversation!

Cut Yourself a Piece of Apple Pie

Here at eTech Parts, we can’t help but notice all the reports released detailing the growth of Apple’s market share in the US and around the world. Job security, ‘miright? We also can’t help but notice our customers’ growing concerns about Samsung’s rise in emerging markets and the increasing difficulty of repairing Apple devices. At eTech Parts we realize the repair business is stronger than ever and growing daily, so it’s easy for us to get excited about the future of repair. We oftentimes find ourselves wishing we had a way of relieving our customers’ worries without giving away too much sensitive information about our company.

We hear the questions everyday:

“Who’s gonna want to repair an iPhone 3G/3GS? They’re so old!”

We sell each and every replacement screen we bring in, for both iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. Five years later and it’s still a very prevalent repair, we promise!

“No one’s going to pay $200 for an iPhone 5 repair when Apple only charges $149!”

Yes, they will, especially if there’s no Apple store in your area. If so, use it to your advantage; people are willing to pay for convenience.

So we got to thinking and came to the conclusion…a pie chart.

These 10 parts make up 75% of the business we do here at eTech Parts, and it makes it easy for us to measure the ups and downs of repair trends. Our top selling parts right now are replacement screens for the iPhone 4S in black and white, with black replacement screens for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4 CDMA trailing closely behind. This chart shows repair shop trends through purchasing and accurately depicts what repair shops are currently repairing the most.

Where’s iPod Touch 5G Screens?!

Unicorns, Big Foot, and the Loch Ness Monster: just a few examples of the unanswered mysteries of the universe. Last year North Korean officials reportedly discovered an ancient Unicorn lair, which according to Gizmodo proved the existence of ancient North Korean King Tongmyong. Just last month, Charlie Sheen went on a last-minute trip to Scotland to hunt for the Loch Ness Monster. Armed only with a bottle of scotch and a sweet helmet, as TMZ reported Charlie didn’t even catch a glimpse of ol’ Nessie.

Another unanswered mystery is where in the world are the iPod Touch 5G replacement screens? This is a question eTech Parts has gotten accustomed to since the release of the iPod Touch 5th Generation. At first, there was no word on when or where the replacement screens would be available. After months of waiting, eTech Parts finally got a shipment of the replacement screens for the iPod Touch 5! We were thrilled, but it was short-lived as we soon realized the quality of the parts were nowhere near eTech Parts high quality standards. We pulled the batch and sent them back to our vendor, refunded our customers and began playing the waiting game once more…

While there may be aftermarket screens available elsewhere for this device, our vendors know the aftermarket parts don’t meet our standards of quality – one of the main reasons we appreciate our suppliers and manufacturers. So far we’re heard from our vendors overseas that quality is the biggest issue with the availability of these parts. The fact that Apple decreased the amount of orders for the iPod Touch 5 definitely doesn’t help the availability of parts, either. We are communicating with vendors daily to make sure eTech Parts is the first to know when these parts are available.

If you’ve heard anything from a legitimate source about these parts, let us know! We’d love to hear from you and gain more insight into this complicated issue. Like us on Facebook, join in the conversation on the Repair Community, and stay tuned for more industry news from eTech Parts.
